Manuscripts Up Close: An Introduction to Codicology

A fully online course

This one-week online course, supported by two Q&A sessions with your tutor, will take you through all stages of manuscript production, from making papyrus, parchment and paper to binding.

The main contents of the course are supported by videos and interviews with conservators and curators to provide you with a real-life approach to working and preserving manuscripts.

Entirely at your own pace

The course is made into five sessions, which you can take at any time during your 8 weeks of access to the platform. Each session has downloadable transcripts and lists of resources.

Course outline

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the key stages in manuscript production.
  • Understand how papyrus, parchment and paper were made.
  • Be able to identify and describe simple quire structures and organisational devices in medieval manuscripts.
  • Be aware of the variety of pigments used in medieval manuscripts and how they were produced.
  • Understand the process by which manuscripts were prepared for writing, copied, illuminated and bound.
  • Have an awareness of historical and current trends in Codicology, including digital and technological initiatives.

Course specifications

Format

This course is delivered online. All content is asynchronous – videos, quizzes and text – supported by two optional Q&A live sessions where there will be a chance to ask questions and give feedback.

The Q&A sessions will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. You will receive the links to the next scheduled sessions with your confirmation e-mail upon booking.

Time investment

This course is designed around five sessions, each containing on average 1:30hrs of video content.

You will have access to the course for 8 weeks from the start date.
