Books of Devotion: Medieval Bibles and Books of Hours

Immerse yourself in the gilded world of biblical manuscripts and Books of Hours.

A fully online course

This one-week online course, supported by two Q&A sessions with your tutor, will take you through the history of the medieval Bible as a book; and through the ins and outs of Books of Hours, which are amongst the most beautiful manuscripts ever made.

Entirely at your own pace

The course is made into five sessions, which you can take at any time during your 8 weeks of access to the platform. Each session has downloadable transcripts and lists of resources.

Course outline

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the stages of development of the Bible and its key versions and translations.
  • Be aware of the main developmental milestones of the Bible as a manuscript through the Middle Ages.
  • Appreciate the connections between Medieval Bibles, politics, society and religious policies.
  • Identify the key sections of a Book of Hours.
  • Understand and identify the unique iconographic programmes found in Books of Hours.
  • Appreciate the structure, provenance and craftsmanship of some of the most celebrated medieval Books of Hours.

Course specifications

Format

This course is delivered online. All content is asynchronous – videos, quizzes and text – supported by two optional Q&A live sessions where there will be a chance to ask questions and give feedback.

The Q&A sessions will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. You will receive the links to the next scheduled sessions with your confirmation e-mail upon booking.

Time investment

This course is designed around five sessions, each containing on average 1:30hrs of video content.

You will have access to the course for 8 weeks from the start date.
